December marks a very important milestone for The Dark Horse Report: our one year anniversary. That's right, the very first Report was published in December of 2015 and boy have we grown since then. Let's take a look at some of the highlights from 2016...
Dark Horse Logo
One of the first things I wanted to do was ensure The Dark Horse Report was recognizable and had a brand that fit the ideology behind the blog. After many sleepless nights and dozens of drafts later, the Dark Horse Logo was created. The logo has since become the recognizable symbol I had hoped for and continues to encourage discussion wherever it's seen. In case you're wondering why the horse is white and not dark it's because this blog aims to shed light on politicians and political issues. With this in mind, the logo can be seen as a dark horse jumping from the unknown into the spotlight.
One of the first features requested by early readers was an email subscription service which has since been implemented. You can now simply register with nothing more than an email address and receive 2 to 3 Reports per month straight to your inbox. No junk or annoying notifications, just political insight that you can understand.
Today, we have subscribers from 5 different provinces including current and past members of municipal and federal governments. We also continue to see readership from every province across Canada with our primary base coming from my home province of B.C.
Over the past few months I have had the opportunity to sit down with numerous political and community leaders and hear their stories. Not only has this allowed me to meet many remarkable people, but it has also help open my eyes to challenges communities continue to face each day in this country. This is something I hope to touch more on in 2017 as I publish new one-on-one interviews.
The most noteable interview of 2016 for me was having coffee with Kevin Falcon. Yes it took a hell of a long time to complete and fact-check but it was well worth it and website traffic jumped over 500% as a result. Falcon and I continue to talk frequently and have had a lot to discuss since the US election...
One of the more recent changes to come to The Dark Horse Report is Election 41.
Several months ago, with the provincial election less than a year away, I set out to create BC's most comprehensive election tracker. Today, I'm proud to say that I have done just that. With the most up-to-date information, in-house calculations, and easy to understand graphs and polling data, Election 41 is the best resource for BC election predictions.
2017 and Beyond
While these are just a few of the highlights from 2016, it has been one busy year with countless difficulties, changes, and even more milestones. Creating an online political resource from scratch with no previous experience has probably been one of the most challenging personal goals I have undertaken. However, I can now say that it has been an amazing journey and when I look ahead to 2017 I see an even brighter year to come.
With the website framework now in place I can begin to focus more on creating engaging and interesting content while expanding my reach. There are also several updates and enhancements planned for the new year not including the recently launched new homepage. I look forward to sharing these changes with you in the coming months and, as always, I am very excited to continue engaging with all of you as we discuss the ever-changing Canadian political landscape.
Thank you for your support, I couldn't have done it without you.
